“During the weekend of the festival, we forgot to stake our tent. And it may not be a surprise to you, but it surely was an unfortunate surprise to us, that when we returned to our group campsite our precious tent was missing. So I just wanted to take this moment to thank the DOPE WOMEN who sacrificed their 5 liter water jug so that our tent would not continue to fly away. It’s no fun trying to find a tent in complete darkness but without your jug we may have never been able to. The climbing community is the best! I feel incredibly grateful to be a part of it.”

My repost failed the other day so here we go again!

Posted @withrepost • @heyflashfoxy “On the first day of the festival, I was climbing with a super rad group of Women of Color. We were working on a funky V3 where the crux was moving over a bulge to the top out. We learned that this climb was an Unnamed V3 on Girlfriend Rock but next to it was a problem called “Up Your Skirt.” Though I’ve always been aware that climbing is a very white cishet male-dominated sport, hearing that we were climbing something so objectifying and disrespectful made us all very upset. We proceeded to collectively brainstorm alternative names. Reflecting on this more has made me realize how many times I have subconsciously chosen to not climb a route/problem based on how its name made me feel. In those moments, I felt the impacts these names had on my identity and values and also how these names suggest who is “meant” to be climbing and who is not. Names that imply discrimination, ignorance and objectification inherently act as a normalizing mechanism. This is not ok. This is also a statement about who were/are the people naming these climbs. There are plenty of climbs that have great names that do not make these suggestions. I’m also curious how the practice of naming climbs started? Naming can be playful, serious or literal (ie. Bowling pin) without coming from a place of power and ownership of areas. Has anyone else thought about this?”

With over 4000 images to edit down to a final selection, choosing my favourites was always going to be tricky! 📸

Loved photographing the @pinnacleclubuk and hearing about what different members thought about @womenstradfestival and seeing how the festival has grown each year 🌿

Proud to be part of the Pinnacle Club crew 💪

@sarahmcleod_ getting a spot from @yalowega during the bouldering clinic at the @treeline_woc Womxn's Climbing Festival a few weeks ago. My favorite thing about this festival is the strong sense of community, culture, and emphasis around women supporting other women, both in climbing and in life.

“ ‘You can't make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.’ ― Michelle Obama (Praise be). After being waitlisted and assuming other plans, I received a message 2 weeks before the festival that a ticket had been released to me. And somehow, despite beyond-the-comfort-zone anxiety about making the trip alone, it fell into place: a serendipitously cheap flight (that I ultimately missed), an airport carpool, a couch to sleep on, a hitchhike from the Buttermilks, a return trip via LA, a detour to witness the California poppies, and a great group of gals with whom I got to share the entire great, hard, growing weekend. I'm grateful and fortunate to climb in the wild with ladies and to be part of this community willing to plane, train, and automobile across the country to stand high on mountains and lead lives of thrill and substance to care for our land and one another.”

@heyflashfoxy “I consider myself to be a pretty average climber. I don’t feel exceptionally hardcore, and find it very difficult to be disciplined or driven enough to ‘take it to the next level’. At the same time, it’s difficult not to compare myself to others. I wonder what it would be like to be as strong, flexible, ape-like, disciplined, injury-free and bold as the person floating my project.
But if I can check my expectations and my ego - that’s when the magic happens! Many times over the last 7 years, I've had to re-learn that climbing for the pure fun of it is the best thing I can do for myself and my climbing. It's not always easy to have this clarity but if I continue to remind myself that I do this because I really fuckin' love it, I’ll always climb and always be stoked! The individuals and community that I surround myself with is a massively important factor - they can help, or they can harm. To me, the Women’s Climbing Festival shows some of the best characteristics of a great community: a gathering of humans with varying levels of hardcore, that build up and support each other with a primary objective to have fun! Together! Pretty sweet eh?”

“Months after the Payahuunadü Women’s Climbing Festival, I am still healing a pulley injury I sustained from my crimpy project in the Happy Boulders. Yet, the event was so amazing that given the choice between attending and getting injured vs. not attending and being injury-free, I wouldn’t change a thing. I created a community of sisters from the Brown Girls Climb workshop. I made memories on breath-taking Nüümü lands that I will cherish forever. And, meeting strong climber womxn lit a fire in my desire to train and gave me confidence in my own abilities. "I learned so much about myself and my sisters that weekend. I learned to have power and how to have humility. I learned to try hard and when to concede. I learned how to be a mentor when I have had none around me during my time growing in the Boise climbing community. I learned what’s in a name and the importance and power of a person’s, or place’s, name. I have a power in me, in my name, which the WCF helped me find and feel and free. Me llamo Shannon Montaño. Soy una montaña. Una montaña sin fronteras."

“This year’s festival was a reminder that the climbing community is filled with dope people. My friend Katie and I needed to catch a ride back to town from the Buttermilks—with two crash pads. It was harder to find a ride than we expected, but within an hour we met two awesome ladies who offered to rearrange their packed car to fit one of the pads, and we flagged down a guy who was able to fit the second pad and us. It was a moment of kindness that reminded me that climbers show up for each other.”

When I plan an event, especially one of my own I always strive to offer a full experience. If you come to my wedding fair it will be more than vendors, if you come to the climbing festival it will be more than climbing. Events are better when they cover all of the senses and touch your spirit.
At this years climbing festival we had Sunset Meditation by the river, a talk about Nutrition, afternoon yoga and much more. .
Pop on over to @treeline_woc to find out more.

“I consider myself to be a pretty average climber.

This is me (the one without the helmet, carrying my kiddo on my back) in my element! If I haven’t been on social here at Wylder Events for a while it’s because I’ve been busy working on my other passion project @treeline_woc and my biggest event of the year the Treeline Womxn’s Climbing Festival which just took place last weekend in Squamish. ..
.
I am a woman of many hats. I love a side hustle, or two, and enjoy creating whether it be businesses, events, artwork, personal connections, experience, any thing!

This event is one that truly speaks to my soul. It’s about womxn connecting through a similar interest, learning, growing and understanding that we are very much not alone.

These are my festival feet, and they still had one more day to go before a shower. .

I just finished the 3rd year of Treeline Womxn’s Climbing Festival ( @treeline_woc ) and while I’m utterly exhausted, my heart is full.

This labour of love takes everything I’ve got from energy, time, vulnerability and strength. It takes me out of my comfort zone and pushes my event management skills further every year. I cry, I don’t sleep, I smile and laugh, I talk a lot and walk many miles. I brushed my teeth once, and think I eat two meals in total.

Every year I enter the weekend thinking I’m crazy, and every year I leave with the confirmation that I am, but I want to do it all over again. ..
This is love. This is passion and sense of place and purpose. This is one of my greatest achievements and something I am most proud of. .
I love to see the connections made by the participants and everyone else involved. I am inspired and grateful for everyone that attends and volunteers for the festival. There are so many amazing womxn in this community who share their time and knowledge willingly and without hesitation. 🙌🏻 Thank you all for being a part of this weekend. With community we thrive and accomplish great things together.

Until next year...

That’s a wrap on our 3rd annual Treeline Womxn’s Climbing Festival!
What a weekend. 🤩
.
We had 10 amazing clinics including a photography clinic with @ladylockoff , trailbuilding with Squamish Access Society, an adaptive climbing workshop with @canadian.adaptive.climbing , nutrition workshop with @megthemidwife and climbing physio with @climbing_physiotherapy ..
@jennaolsthoorn led us through some afternoon post climb yoga, a magical sunset meditation by the river and a morning run. @happiestoutdoors spread the good word about Leave No Trace and helped us build an awesome trail.
..
The wonderful @tiffanymelius worked with participants on some coaching and helped push the boundaries in our Sport Climbing clinic as well as being a guest speaker for our Friday night chat along with @gorisb and @bstrainor of @mountain.mentors .
@gorisb also joined the Trad is a Rad clinic and @tiffanymelius inspired our new to outdoor climbing group in Gym to Crag. @aveeves and @yalowega gave us a tour of the classics in Squamish bouldering.

We eat well with @flacastacos for the family dinner and @mountainsqueeze lunches. @counterpartcoffee fuelled our morning with their amazing coffee and @apreslager quenched our thirst at dinner time.. -
Many thanks to our guides who make this event extra special. Who inspire and encourage and pass on their knowledge. You are all THE BEST and most integral part of the festival as are our volunteers 🙌🏻

"Working at a rock gym, you would think I climbed all the time. I was feeling unmotivated/not climbing as much as I wanted leading up to the festival. I was also slightly nervous about meeting a whole bunch of new people and how I would do climbing outside. Luckily, I didn't have anything to worry about...I was able to meet so many new people who were so friendly and were there that weekend for the same reason I was! To climb and share community. I was inspired by the many strong womxn that I met, not just their strength in climbing, but their motivation to educate the world on their passions. I am so thankful for my body that allows me to be outside and also to experience the beauty that is Payahuunadu"

Exciting news!
We have @gorisb joining us for the climbing festival this year. She will be one of our speakers on Friday night and joining the Trad is Rad Push Your Boundaries clinic on Saturday.
Brittany has been following a lifelong calling and dedication to climbing since the first moment she walked into a climbing gym in Fort Collins, CO at 9 years old. Nowadays she can be found dipping her crusty climber toes in the aquamarine waters of the Skykomish River after long days climbing at Index, Washington in the summers while working seasonally at Seattle’s Girls Rock Math, which runs STEM-based summer camps for young girls. The rest of the year she works remotely doing graphic design for GRM and climbs full time wherever it’s warm enough.

See you soon Brittany!

Debra: "I love climbing with my daughter. We've always been really close and climbing brings us even closer--with all the emotions that go with this sport: determination, wonder, fear. My ’real life' job involves teams, budgets, business reviews. In the corporate setting, fear dresses up like anger or procrastination or denial. But when you climb, you face fear straight on. And you think, oh yeah, I know you. You’re the one usually dressed up like perfection. You have to settle in with it. Climbing changes your life. Which is why I’ve launched a passion project called Dareful to encourage women over 50 (although you can be anybody, any age if you want to roll with us) to engage in outdoor adventure."
Aletha: "In college I was an athlete, and when I graduated I had the basics planned out like a job and place to live, but one of the big open questions I hadn't figured out was: what would sports look like in this new chapter of my life now that I'm not playing competitive sports anymore? When I first thought about climbing, I wasn't sure how I would feel about it since it was so different than what I was used to. Every sport I played previously, everything came down to working with a team to outscore our opponents. But once I started climbing, I realized it's just as competitive as any other sport I've played, the only difference is the opponent you're up against is yourself, which in a lot of ways is even more challenging than going toe to toe with someone else. And I didn't lose the sense of team camaraderie I thought I would lose by taking up a solo sport. Every time I climb with groups, like at the Women's Climbing Festival, I'm always so amazed that everyone gives that same teammate encouragement and cheers each other on. And what I love most about climbing is that my mom and I do it together, we belay for each other, train together, and have basically become our own team, which is really special to me."

I somehow lucked myself into a ticket to the @heyflashfoxy Women’s Climbing Festival this past March, and I had the best time climbing. It was the most confident I’ve ever felt while climbing and bouldering outdoors. I even stuck my first heel hook on real rock. It’s the process in the project. 🤘03.27.19 #heyflashfoxy #womensclimbingfestival #bouldering #climblikeagirl #climboutside #girlswhoclimb #happyboulders #bishop #california #2019

"I love to laugh. The weekend is bookmarked and dog-eared by the various and numerous moments of pure joy and silly fun that I experienced with the incredible women and people that I met. While I take climbing very seriously in many ways, there is nothing like letting the joy of being outside with friends overtake you. Experiencing the delight of topping out a send-train, crawling through a natural passageway and seeing if you can fit, or trying to get through a spot without taking your crash pad off and epically failing all led to some of the best laughs and most amazing friendships that I am sure will last a lifetime."

This event is really special. We camp together at our home base, we share family-style meals together, we spend lots of time connecting, climbing, swapping stories. We climb, we do yoga, we give back through trail maintenance. It's also relatively small in terms of numbers, which keeps it intimate. We get to know each other.

You can still sign up for the Festival, AND a few of the awesome clinics here!!
