Do you ever want wish the rain away?

In life, obstacles are inevitable, no matter how much we try to avoid them. Speaking as a black man of Generation X, we were raised to suppress our emotions and always show strength. Those who showed emotion were considered whiny or sensitive. Society has implanted a picture of what a “real man” should look like in most of our heads.

Unfortunately, for me, that stigma had a consequence. After decades of holding my emotions in, I had a real breakdown. I was never taught how to deal with my own emotions. My logic went out the back door and my emotions began to do all of my thinking and speaking. Not good. When emotions take the place of logic, we rationalize irrational thoughts.

That was the darkest point of my life. At one point, I honestly believed that depression wasn’t a real disorder. That people needed to just “man up” and face life. Funny how that perspective changes when it happens to you. Depression is REAL. I had to force myself to wear a smile for the world everyday. I felt like no one cared. The reality of it was, I didn’t care about myself.

I was finally convinced to see a therapist. During the first session, as she asked questions and I talked, I began to realize how much I had been holding in. There were things from my childhood that still affected me as an adult!

Therapy is not a finger-pointing session. To be honest, it’s the opposite. It gives you the tools you need in order to cope with the trauma you have been experiencing for so long. My therapist never judged me. I realized that the tools she gave me forced me to see my own reflection. I learned the importance of forgiving myself, and putting myself first. My logic began to return and I became a better version of myself. Reaching out for help was the best decision I made in my life.

If you are depressed, or you know someone who is, don’t be afraid to seek help, or open up to someone. You are special to someone. If you don’t think you are, be special to yourself. Don’t be afraid or doubtful. Embrace the Rain, so you can see that the sun is on the other side of those clouds.

Can I get real for minute? I’m a generally a happy upbeat person. I usually have a very positive attitude. But lately I’ve been struggling to put the smile on my face every morning. There is no single thing I can pinpoint as to why...everything just feels a little harder. It’s so hard for me to understand, as mentioned above I’ve always been so happy and upbeat. I’m starting to realize sometimes it’s ok to not be ok.

However, I have felt very led today to go make this exact round. It was almost a robotic process. Through the whole process all I can continue to think is “he’s never let me down and he’s never left my side. In my brightest days or my darkest hours he’s always been there. I don’t know who else need to hear this, but it’s time to “Let Go & Let God” This too shall pass. Whatever is weighing heavy on your heart “don’t worry about anything, pray about everything and you will experience God’s peace”

You are not your anxiety – you are not the group of people you couldn’t form words in front of because you were too busy thinking, you are not the irrational response you give to social gatherings. You are not the bills you think will drag you down, or the job you think you’re awful at. You are not the future that keeps you awake at night, or the past you find yourself dwelling on unable to change. ☀️ Life goes in cycles, just like our breath. Just like the sun, the moon, the year, the seasons.

😘 Meditation helps us be kind to ourselves when all else fails.

🧠 When my brain wants to bring me down for absolutely no reason, except that for every high, there appears to be a low.

😌 Just as we practice in mindfulness meditation, for every breath in, there is a breath out.
.
🤔 For every distraction, there is an opportunity to notice it, and come back to the breath.
.
💩 One day, one week, or one month, we may feel like sh*t. The next, we may not. And that’s OK. We’re human. Natural. Normal. Living beings.

❤️ Other forms of meditation can help us realise this even more, especially if breath meditation doesn’t cut it for you.

💚 “Metta” or “loving-kindness” - pioneered in the West by the amazing teacher Sharon Salzberg - is one example. Instead of asking us to focus on the breath, it asks us to repeat a positive phrase to ourselves and others, wishing us love, success, health, peace.
.
🤗 It’s the best way I know to give a proper, heartfelt hug to yourself and remember that life isn’t linear (other than wrapping yourself in a massive crushed velvet blanket on the sofa, which I ALSO did this week, not gonna lie).

Instinctively we look for ways to transition. Mindless we easily fill that need with a quick glance at our screens.
Creating more disconnect instead of connect. 🙋🏽‍♀️Who checks their phone, briefly-mindlessly before getting out of their car. Before starting a chore. Transitions between responsibilities. Before bed. First thing in morning.

>Roll your neck or shoulders.
>Check in with a loved one-the toddler in the back seat, you spouse or child next to you.
>walk into work without looking at your phone, acknowledge the person next to you.
>If you do turn to your device do it with intent, purpose, understanding go why you are turn to it.

Sometimes I think “why aren’t my kids over their past?” “Seriously how can they still have trauma?” But today I woke up with stomach pains and anxiety and I didn’t really know why . I have felt uneasy and nervous all morning. I chalked it up to “I’m just crazy” and have gone about my morning but this nagging feeling that something isn’t right kept on . I open up my Timehop and this is what happened today 2 years ago - I had my 1st major surgery. My leg was injured from our car wreck and today, 2 years ago , I had knee surgery. Go back 3 years , this was the last time we took a photo with my ex-step dad . The last family thing he did with us before he left. This day 3 yrs ago was a happy day but now I look back and all I can see is how it was the end. The last birthday party he attended, the last time he was at my house. Trauma. It sticks around and it hurts. And I’m an adult , I understand that accidents happen, I get that people can choose to leave and it still affects me. I’m not curled in a ball sobbing uncontrollably but it still affects me. How much more does it affect them ? How many days are wired with hurts physical and emotional ? I am often so short with them, impatient at their lack of growth but they are amazingly strong ! To go through what they went through and have anxiety and deal with trauma brains and still be as great as they are !! I’m proud of my boys . I’m sad that even after they joined our family they were hurt by people , that my family and others have chosen to leave and make more sadness for them. But  Disney taught us in inside out that sadness is ok to feel . Don’t stay stuck in it but feel it , acknowledge it and move on. It’s ok to not be ok .

There’s no rush. I can jump back in AT ANY MOMENT. It’s been a rough week, a rough month to be exact, and I decided weeks ago that I COME FIRST. Man, who knew that taking care of yourself was so much work! This journey is so much more than #weightloss it’s also about becoming stronger mentally. Im taking time to resettle my mind, restore my soul, and be me again. Until then, I reassure myself that ITS OK TO KOT BE OK. .

Back to school!!!! It's a stressful time for students, teachers, and parents. Teachers, you are incredible. You have so many responsibilities on your plate and aren't given nearly enough credit for your positive role in students' development. I don't want to add another ongoing task to your to-do list, yet I want to remind you not  to assume students are ok just because they get good grades and aren't disruptive or disrespectful. I know from personal experience that it's easy to fall through the cracks that way. In elementary school, there are parent-teacher conferences for every student. But, at least in my district, teachers and parents really only talked in middle and high school if a student was failing or in disciplinary trouble. I can think of multiple times that attentive and caring teachers pulled me aside to express concern-that I was shaking and rocking during class, that I never spoke loud enough to be heard, that my shoulders were bleeding because I scratched them so hard-and they were supportive. But none pulled my parents or guidance counselor into the loop. That was a mistake that happened again and again, and it let me get sicker and sicker. Maybe they assumed my parents already knew. But I was putting significantly more effort into masking my symptoms at home than at school. See, OCD scrupulosity told me that I would be a "horrible daughter" if I made them worry.  Once my parents finally found out what was going on, they were my staunchest advocates and steadfast supporters. We could have avoided a lot of pain if a teacher let them know that I seemed highly distressed during class during the six years my anxiety was escalating before I sought help on my own.

So today in DnD works I'm a bit sad! Just as I was taking a photo of me needing to "make peace" with my gang of d20s (because of a horror run of single digit rolls) I find out one of the games I play in has ended. 
There's always the feeling of grief, separation and loss when a campaign end for whatever reason. The important thing, though, is DnD has to be fun!! If it's not fun then I think that defeats the purpose of playing, maybe. The fun has to be for players and DM alike!

So you try and do good. You jump through hoops to get aboard the ndis plan. But once the therapies start rolling in you start to notice those dreaded meltdowns coming back into your life like your in-laws uneducated knowledge of autism. 😬🤔 It’s a thing you hate and can’t stand to tolerate for long. The noise and repetitiveness it holds makes your own screams for help louder then their full blown screams. 
Horse therapy was great today and definitely will be a therapy to do again. But the anxiety of feeling sick as she sat in a car driving down a bendy road for half hour sent her into a screaming match I just couldn’t stop. Loving the peace and the horses while there I knew she would gain confidence to do it once again. But that change in routine alters something within her brain. It’s like going right then being forced to turn left yet having to end up on that same route again. The mind just cannot catch up to all the new that is being processed. Ending in a full swing meltdown within the shower where she cry for over half hour just to calm her anxious body by telling her mind it’s ok. It only took all day to settle her disrupted thoughts which she only knows how to keep on track when going that one familiar way we know to be routine.~ 💙🧩
